Curing sleep apnea by sleeping on stomach or side

My pulmonologist told me to try sleeping on my stomach until my cpap was delivered, I tried this and got an amazing night of sleep. I know back sleeping is considered the most conducive to sleep apnea, has anyone tried training themselves to sleep in different positions as a CPAP alternative? Seems like a worthwhile way to try and avoid the mask.

I mean, can you actually change your sleep position? I feel like if I tried sleeping on my stomach I either wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, or I’d just turn over while sleeping.

I’ve heard of people sleeping with a tennis ball or backpack on to prevent back sleeping. Not sure how effective it is or whether it’s worth it.
