Trouble winding down at night, anyone else?

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well.

I wanted to ask if anyone here struggles with falling asleep because their mind stays too active at night. Even when I avoid caffeine and screens late, my brain still feels “switched on,” and it takes a long time to relax. I’ve noticed this happens more on days when I spend time on mentally stimulating activities, even light ones like word or puzzle games — similar to what people mention when talking about spellbeegame website and other brain-engaging apps.

So I’m curious — when mental stimulation affects sleep onset, is it more about timing, screen exposure, or overall cognitive load during the day? And what’s worked for you to calm your mind before bed without feeling bored or restless?

Would love to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Yes I deal with this a lot for me it is more about mental stimulation close to bedtime than screens themselves. A short wind-down routine reading something light or a body-based activity like stretching has helped quiet my mind without feeling bored.

Hi halla9:

My mind goes into overdrive late evening and I find it difficult
to settle down, relax and feel sleepy. I average 4 hours of sleep- usually fall asleep around 11PM but wake up for the day ay 3AM) but I seem to function adequately during the daytime. I do doze off here during the day here and
there for 10 minutes or so - that's when I feel totally relaxed and secure.
The fundamental problem is insecurity and inability to relax. What does help to some extent is daily exercise ( I walk 8-9 miles every morning) , reviewing my activities and finances early in the morning ) and taking shower at the end of the day before dinner. These three activities improve the quality of sleep ( deep REM) by not the amount of sleep. I am a vegetarian, 5' 11" and weigh 140 lbs. I don't know whether my diet has anything to do with the amount of sleep I am getting. I am partially retired and live in South Florida- the climate and outdoor walking does help me relax to some degree, but my mind is always racing frequently.
