I’ve been using my machine for approximately 10 days now. I did my weekly clean on Wednesday this past week and it worked fine Wednesday and Thursday night. Last night it’s very loud and makes a loud gurgling sound. I’ve checked hoses and connections seems connected well! When I went to get my cpap weren’t very helpful showed me connections and what not and set up just said I had to turn off and on. Also I haven’t seen cpap clinic yet, the sleep therapist told me I had severe apnea and I should get machine right away. So I’m kind of lost and don’t know anyone that uses cpap. My machine is ResMed
Hey, thanks so much for your question and congrats on starting your CPAP journey! It’s completely normal to feel a bit lost at first — especially with severe apnea and being new to the machine.
From what you’re describing, a loud gurgling sound is often related to water in the humidifier chamber or the hose, sometimes called “rainout.” A few things you can try:
-
Check the water chamber: Make sure it’s not overfilled and seated properly.
-
Empty and dry the hose: Water can collect overnight and cause noise.
-
Use distilled water: Tap water can leave deposits that make gurgling worse.
-
Room temperature: Colder rooms can increase condensation; slightly warmer rooms or a heated hose (if available) can help.
-
Mask adjustments: Make any adjustments while lying down and with the machine on to ensure a proper seal.
Since you haven’t been to the CPAP clinic yet, it’s a good idea to schedule a visit so a therapist can check your setup, mask fit, and pressure settings. If the machine continues to be unusually loud even after these steps, the equipment may need a check or replacement.
You’re not alone — many new users go through a short adjustment period. Once your setup is dialed in, it usually becomes much quieter and more comfortable. Hang in there! You’ve got this ![]()
