My husband has had high blood pressure for a while now and we’ve been unable to get to the root of it. He eats relatively well, exercises, etc. He recently took a home sleep apnea test and it looks like be might have OSA. Wondering if it’s possible these two things are related and whether CPAP therapy or other treatments might help his hypertension.
Absolutely, I had stage 2 hypertension (143) before I started CPAP therapy. It didn’t solve the problem outright but it certainly brought it down. I think genetics and diet played a huge role for me as well.
Hi, Absolutely — obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and high blood pressure are very much connected. When someone has OSA, their breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, which causes drops in oxygen and activates the body’s stress response. That can lead to increased blood pressure both during the night and throughout the day.
A lot of people with “resistant” high blood pressure (hard to control even with lifestyle changes and meds) actually have undiagnosed OSA. If your husband’s test suggests he might have it, that could definitely be contributing.
The good news is that CPAP therapy — if it’s recommended — can help. It keeps the airway open and reduces those apnea events, which in turn can help lower blood pressure over time. Definitely something worth following up on — sounds like you’re on the right path!
